How Does NAT Work?

However, the private IP address is not routable over the internet, and therefore, the packets cannot be directly transmitted to the internet. This is where NAT comes into play.

A router with NAT functionality acts as a gateway between the local network and the internet. When a device from the local network sends a packet to the internet, the router replaces the private IP address in the packet with its public IP address. This allows the packet to be transmitted over the internet, and when the response packet is received, the router uses the mapping information to route it back to the appropriate device within the local network.

Types of NAT:
